WHAT EXACTLY IS JET?
Jet is old, millions of years old, Jurassic old. 192 million years is a long time.
Whitby jet happens to be found at Whitby but the same jet appears up and down the East coast if you know where to look.
What we find is possibly from the same places as Whitby Jet, possibly from Norfolk. Occasionally. small seams are exposed as the cliffs erode.
Jet is fossilised wood from a species very similar to the Chile pine or Monkey Puzzle tree. It grew here, a lot…
Hard black jet is the result of carbon compression and salt water. Soft jet is the result of carbon compression and fresh water and isn’t anything we’d use for jewellery.
AS A MATTER OF INTEREST...
In case you want to try Jet hunting or testing any pieces you already have, good quality Jet draws a fine brown line on a lighter stone or a piece of wet and dry sandpaper. A broader brown line is lower quality, softer Jet and a black line is sea coal which can look very similar whilst it’s still sea wet.
It’s been in and out of fashion since the Neolithic period in Britain but most people associate its use in jewellery with the complete blackness of Queen Victoria’s mourning that inspired a whole new resurgence.
Less ornate and intricate than Victorian tastes in jewellery, its popularity continues.
Jet is said to protect against negativity, heal and purify especially headaches, migraines, traumatic injuries and grief. It cleanses other crystals and ‘grounds’… and brings plain old good luck….
You may believe in its less tangible properties or not but the fact remains that it is beautiful.

Jet carves quite easily compared to other minerals and stones. It’s surprisingly light in weight but it does take time and patience and a lot of care to get it right.
